70.3 you might ask? Well they don't call it a 1/2 triathlon anymore. At least the Ironman stamped events. They go by the miles. I guess it sounds even harder stating the distance instead of just saying 1/2.
Barry completed his SECOND half, I mean 70.3, Ironman on June 29, 2008 at Buffalo Springs in Lubbock Texas.
Barry and I went down early so he could have a day of rest before the event. The kids stayed with Grandma Johnson, except Cameron, who kept the fort down while we were away. We had a blast. Bo an old employee and friend is from Lubbock so he showed us around and took us to eat at some really go
od places to eat - YUM!
Have you ever had brisket nachos? Those were the best.
The day before the race we drove the bike and run course and it was not an easy one. The flats were not even going to be easy due to the Texas winds. We caught a trianchela (sp) BIG SPIDER that you could see crossing the road from the car. We also saw some wild turkey out in a field. That was neat.
Barry had been planning for 100 d
egree weather since it had been that hot for the last 2 weeks in Lubbock prior to the race. The day of the race was low 70's that morning and over cast. His start time was suppose to be at 6:45 but was about 20 minutes late. Nothing like getting up at 4:30 so we could make it in time to park at 5:00. What? I wasn't racing - but Barry was my ride so I rolled out of bed.
During his bike it started to pour down rain so I took a nap in the Jetta for about 15 min. I finally got up and went to watch for him to pull the last big hill before he went down to transition for the run. I saw a lot of road rash due to the steep hills and wet roads.
All in all Barry had a great race. Met his goals and had a good time and didn't feel like he was dead afterwards. He just wished his swim was better.
So CA here we come in August for the full Triathlon - the Vineman. Wonder if I will have to get up as early?
