First Day of School

Creed had his first day of school on Monday. He was very excited to go.  When he blessed the food that morning he said, "...and please help me stay out of the principles office."

The rest of the kids were also excited to be going back and seeing friends after a fun summer.  Sierra started 2nd grade,  Cody 5th and Cameron 8th.

I told Cameron I wanted to take a photo of him going into the school BUT that is not appropriate behavior for a parent when you are in Jr. High so I hurried and snapped a shot of him in the parking log where we were hidden between cars.  Shweew!
Creed did not mind having his picture taken in his classroom.  He seemed a little unsure but was ready to go back to school the next day.  The thing he was sad about was waking up again early in the morning.

When Creed got home we asked him what his favorite thing was and he said it was recess (no surprise there).  I asked him if he had made any friends and he said he made 17.  He said he best friend is Carter.

Yesterday when he came home from school he said he his frog had to be moved but not to worry it was just a warning.

Poor Jetta :(

When you see those blown out tires on the highway from the semis, did you ever wonder what would happen to your care if you happened to be driving behind one when it blew out?
Take a look at our Jetta.  This is what happens...sigh.  Jennifer Vance,  a good employee of ours, was borrowing the car to visit family.  She was on her way to church when the semi in front of her blew a tire.  It hit the ground and bounced up and hit the car.  She said she knew it was going to be bad when she saw the VW thing from the grill fly up in the air over the top of the car. The driver of the big rig saw it happen and pulled over.  Fortunately it looks like they are going to pay for it - which is good because the bill isn't pretty (close to $3,000).
We are glad that Jennifer and her friend were not hurt.
Poor Jetta.
UPDATE: The trucking company's insurance company said they were not liable for the accident because the tire was less than two months old so it is the tire companies problem. Our insurance company is now handling it.

2008 Johnson Family Reunion - South Padre Island

Where is Cody's body?
South Padre Island, TX

We felt like we had not even unpacked from our Utah/California trip when we left the house on Tuesday August 12, 2008 for South Padre Island, TX for our Johnson Family Reunion.  You know I don't think we were all the way unpacked.  So off we went, headed for the beach.  The kids could hardly stand it - especially Creed who could not wait to see the ocean.

You would think it would just be a quick drive down to TX.  Arkansas touches Texas right so how far could it be?  Well it is not close.  It took us a day and a half.  As we were driving into the island Creed said, "Dad I see the parking lot for the beach."  Not yet was the reply back.
Once we settled into our condo we headed for the beach.  A side note:  Martha a.k.a Mom or Grandma Johnson did a great job picking out the place we would all stay.  Just across the road from the beach and very nice facilities.  Well we loved ours - it was homey and had nice decor.  Although, I was a bit jealous of Leslie's families... they had bright red walls with a full length mirrored wall - yes the entire wall.  With wonderful inspirational quotes plus an awesome dragon statue on the counter not to mention the prized mask that had a topless mermaid sitting on the face of the mask in the aqua colored master bedroom .  Sigh, if only we could have all been so lucky.  Dang.

Jennifer and Bryson

The beach we great.  The weather was very hot and humid but for some reason when you are by the water you never really noticed.  The waves were big enough to take you for a ride - intentional or not.  Creed was smashed to the bottom a few times but he didn't seem to care.  He just loved it all.  We had fun hanging out with everyone.   The ultimate frisbee game was fun to watch and the competition was stiff but friendly.

One morning there was a fishing trip in the bay.  I really wanted to go but was not sure how welcome I would be as I was going to be the only "girl" that decided to go, but I LOVE to fish and have always wanted to fish in the ocean.  All was well - no one made me walk the plank for coming along.  The trip started out great - we started fishing at the end of the bay where there were big rolling waves...did I mention the big rolling waves...we were really catching fish like crazy and then I started feeling sick. I took some stuff a head of time but it did not work.  I threw up once, but I was not to be out done by Cameron who also threw up.  I think Keith really wanted to but he didn't want to be a follower so he just kept his in.  Once we moved further back into the bay the waves calmed and so did our stomaches.  I really had a fun time, despite the sea sickness.  We caught several different types of fish, croackers, white fish, sand trought, perch, and one very small red snapper that had to be thrown back.  I think between all of us (15) we caught around 100 fish.

Gotta love that 50 cent vending machine tattoo!

Another favorite thing were the sand duns. That was the same night we feasted on Gary and Lisa's shrimp boil. Great job guys it was great!  Creed thought he was Superman or Super Sandman or he just wanted to be like his cousin Keith...thanks Keith for giving him great ideas!  Now what are we suppose to do with him?

Eeeek!

All the girl cousins and some of the boy cousin.

Martha cooking the dogs. Hey is that a Jerry Johnson invention she is using?

Saturday we spent a little time on the beach and then headed out around 3:00 p.m. to get a jump start on our drive back home.  We had to return by today (Sunday) because we have school tomorrow.  We could not miss Creed's first day of school!

We all had a great time and the kids vote to go back to the beach for the next reunion.  They do get to still play in the sand because we brought back half of the beach in our car - fun fun!

The Race....

As most of you know Barry has been training for a full triathlon about a year.  He set his sites on an Ironman stamped race in FL but was not able to get in...it filled up too fast.  At least we know he is not the only mad person out there trying to accomplish such things.  So he and his triathlete buddies (Bob: brother in-law & Tom: Bob's brother) found a race in Windsor, CA.
The race was August 2, 2008.  We headed to Santa Rosa after a good visit in Salt Lake City, UT.  It was only suppose to be a 11 hr drive but the CA traffic gods did not think highly of us and it took us more like 15 - so we were excited to find a hotel.
The next day Barry and I went to the registration and vendor stuff to look around and hook up with the rest of the gang.  We drove parts of the bike course and saw where the swim was going to be held and also took in little bits and pieces of the run course, which was not going to be very fun.  26.2 miles w/ three out and backs...are you serious?  Nothing like seeing that finish line two times before you get to come in.

After looking at the entire course Barry decided he needed to add an hr to his bike time - he figured it would take him 7 hrs - there were a lot more hills than planned.  The run he had always planned on just surviving and run walking and walking some more to finish.  He would have plenty of time for the cut off time at 11:00 that night.

The next day I slept in while Barry got ready and left.  He went and picked up Bob so they could be there for their start time at 6:45.  Leslie came and picked me up at 7:30 and we headed to the swim start to see them come in (which by the way was in a different place than where the bike to run trans. was - a little different).

After the swim they all looked good and they were all ahead of what they thought they would be.  It was held in the Russian River so part was up stream and the other part was down stream - which of course was better.  It was pretty slow moving water.
I cheered for Barry as he went by.  I had my own car now to drive, since I had some time to hang out (approx. 7 hrs) I decided to head to the coast since I was so close.  It was only 14 miles away.  I found a place to hike down to the water - which was pretty dang cold - and take photos of the Harbor Seals.  They are pretty cute.  I also decided you would have to have the fat of those Harbor Seals to play in the water like they do.

After a bit I headed back to the car and drove into Windsor to try and catch Barry on his bike...I was pretty early...I know it was going to be around 7 hrs but for some reason I have to come back 3 - 4 hrs early so I don't miss him....I am a crazy person. I get too anxious.
There were a lot of other people to look at.  They had a 1/2 triathlon called Barb's race that was for women only so I got to see those women coming and going - which was interesting.  Different crowd than the 1/2 Ironman where there is money to win and pros to qualify.
Barry was right on his time goal and by this time it had become extremely HOT...it was mid 90's.  They had told us normal is 80's.   Barry went out on his run for his first loop or out and back...he stopped and talked to me for a moment and told me how he hates running and he would see me later.
I waited around and cheered for others and the rest of our group (Leslie - Barry's sister was doing the 13.1 mile run for the Barb's race...she was signed up in a relay.  Tom also had a daughter doing the 1/2 by herself...etc.)
I go and get something to eat...the best salad ever or I was extremely hungry.  It was a Cabbo Cobb Salad...chicken w/ beans, lettuce, black olives and tortia chips w/ a mango salsa. YUM.
Barry figured it would take him two hrs for each loop making him a 6 hr marathon runner -- so I got back about the approx. time again and here comes Barry walking w/ a race offical onto the sidewalk.
I looked at him and in a confused not so loving wife way ask "What are you doing?"  Not, is everything okay dear? Are you hurt, sick...etc?  Nice huh...need to work on myself a little.
Barry looked at me w/a very pail face and big glassed over eyes and did the cutting his throat sign.  He said he was done.
After he had left for the second out and back he started to feel cramps in his legs.  He thought to himself that was odd...so he got some salt pills from an aid station and drank some more gatorade.  He had been hitting every aid station for some kind of liquid and he said they had really good little bites of peaches.  After the salt pills (which was about mile 11)  he started getting sick to his stomach and dizzy.  By mile 15 he was throwing up and could not keep anything down.  None of his liquids had been taken in by his body...they were just sitting in his stomach doing nothing. He got a police escort back and then that is when I ran into him.
We went to the med. area and it looked like something you would see on M.A.S.H.  All the people in the cots and i.v.  The heat had taken more than just Barry down.  Before he came in they said it was 98 and that the road temp was 103.
Tom came in shortly after he finished his race (he finished in 12:01 - oh did I mention he is the father of Kyle Perry the really fast kid who runs for BYU - he broke a 4 min mile on an indoor track this year - Tom has never done any other distance races ever or competed in anything like this - makes you kind of sick. :)  He won his age group (53). and gave Barry some enduralite pills.  Barry felt a lot better in about 15 min. and he was up eating fruit and chicken noodle soup.
Once he was out of the med. place he said he felt fine about what happened that he did all he could do and he just didn't have the right supplements to keep his body working properly but all was well and he didn't want people feeling sorry for him because he didn't feel bad.
48hrs later Barry was bugged at the race and really bothered he didn't have those dang enduralite pills so he could have finished the race.
So is there another full triathlon/ironman in Barry's future...he first said never - now he said maybe but I think yes.  He really loves the 1/2 distance.  So stay tuned to see how long it will take him before he decides to do another full.
PS We decided NOT to have our kids compete this year in the Conway Kids Tri...too much going on w/ Barry training - Cameron's x-country camp @ BYU that he LOVED and traveling down to Padre Island for the Johnson Reunion.

Visit from Utah

Well I am behind as you can all see.  The first part of July my Mom, Jennifer and Stanton came to visit for a couple of weeks.  It was a lot of fun.  Our kids got to know their cousin a lot better.  Creed even shared his toys really well.  Near the end you could tell the "honeymoon" nearing an end for the two of them.  Little fights and not sharing started to pop up - but all in all they really got a long.  Here are a few photos.

Not arranged very exciting are they....
